Do you want to be a WM? @ 12-02-2007 09:59 AM
Do you want to be a WM and sit in the East? Many people do not take this office seriously enough.
I do know a lot of Brethren that are happy to stay a MM and take offices on the ladder or Stay Stewards. This is fine if that is what they want and they should not be pressurised to progress if they do not want to.
Some Brethren want to get to the East so they can wear the Apron of a PM. They also only see the ritual work carried out by the WM in Lodge, If that is not enough! Being a WM is a full time 24hours a day, 7 days a week with phone and email messages to Brethren, Province and Grand Lodge. He is also required to visit other Local Lodges and attend Provincial Lodges at the drop of a hat which can be many miles of travelling.
This is not to put people off but to be thought about.
Saying that it can be a very enjoyable experience and a very proud moment to govern your Lodge. There are now a lot of books around regarding the responsibilties of a WM and advising the Master Elect on how to look forward to your coming year. These are a recommended read and will inform you of your expected duties.
I am really looking forward to being WM in Craft in 3 years, WM in Mark in 4 years time and are starting to learn the ritual for both degrees Now! :o

I would like to stay MM for the time being. I am more interested in research and stuff like that than to dedicate myself to an office in the lodge. Maybe when I get more time but for now MM is fine!

That is fine Shawn, do not rush into things. I know Brethren that have Stewards after their Raising for 7 years and a couple of Bros have never been through the chair after 20 years!

On the first of the new year, I am getting laid off. I aint to upset because now I can get back into school and also be more active in the lodge and then get another job that will not affect school or lodge...

I am sorry to hear about your job Shawn. Although, things happen for a reason in life and this may be the break you require that will change your life for the better. You are still young and can do anything you want in life if you really want it. Remember, family, job, Lodge, in that order. Hope all works out well and keep us informed.

In the case of my Lodge many are too old to and can not attend so officers have no choice but to stay in there chairs. I was told not long ago to expect to start sitting in chairs because of this. Personally I look forward to it.

When I say sit in the chair, I mean the WM chair. Some Brethren do not have the time to learn the work of the WM but are happy to do the other offices, ie, JD, SD, JW, SW. This is fine as WM is a big responsibilty. I am looking forward to siiting in the (WM) chair, others enjoy doing other offices but do not want to be WM. You need the experience of ALL the offices if you are going to be WM.
