Interesting article! I have looked at the UK Membership from 1750 to 2000.
I personally think we are dwindling back down to the original number.
If you look at how many Masons the USA had in 1750 to what it has today it has grown tremendously (same as the UK).
Masonry should not just be about numbers. People join, people leave but it has existed for many hundreds of years with rises and falls in numbers.
Masonry was thriving in the 1700s in the UK although only a few were excepted. Now people are accepted for the numbers and financial reasons rather than the Fraternal reasons. Times change, population increase, peoples perspective change but freemasonry landmarks and traditions have stayed the same.
If there are 10 Lodges in one area with 10 members in each the they should merge to 5 or 6 lodges and build from there. This keeps the lodges interesting and worthwhile attending.
All this is only in my opinion of course.
