Not properly prepared. @ 09-23-2006 11:15 AM
Not properly prepared.
As my first offices of the year are upon me, I will be JD in one and IG in the other.
I have learnt the duties of an IG but the question I have and can’t find the procedures for is, When the candidate is outside the door of the Lodge and the Tyler knocks to state he is ready, the IG goes to the door and checks the candidate is properly prepared. The IG then says “Who have you there?”
My question is if the IG opens the door to check the candidate is properly prepared and finds that he is not, what is the next procedure for the IG?
I have seen rituals where the ceremonies are stopped midway because someone has spotted the candidate is not properly prepared after he has been admitted and the Tyler has got a ribbing afterwards. I think the responsibility is with the IG not the Tyler so no one is going to get past me that is not properly prepared! >
Do I close the door and report to the WM or the JW and what do I say?
We work Emulation if this makes any difference.

tell the tyler that the candidate is not properly prepared ( and state why ) and tell him to rectify the situation ,close the door and report the situation to the W.M. sit down and await the tylers knock

If there is nothing specific I guess you would simply explain that he is improperly prepared, but make it sound like the ritual, something like,
A poor candidate in a state of ill prepare is being properly attired by Bro Tyler ready to be admitted to lodge after second examination....
or something like that.
The responsibilty of the candidate being properly prepared is the Tylers, the IG has to check. Without wanting to be rude it is written down how the candidate should be prepared so there shouldnt really be any errors. Although saying that during my degrees I did have wrong side open and wrong side rolled for one, but even us masons are only human. (well on the outside anyway LOL)

I agree the responsibilty of the candidate being properly prepared is the Tylers, the IG has to check, but the IG vouches to the WM that the candidate is properly prepared and he is the last line before entering the Lodge.
